Above is the best album announcement of 2018. Freddie Gibbs makes his return to rap tonight with his new album, Freddie. The cover is a play on a classic Teddy Pendergrass album, Teddy. The front cover as well as the back are mirror images of Teddy’s.
Where the album differs though, is content. Gibbs is a gangsta rapper, and that’s what this is. A whole lot of gangsta rap. 10 songs, and they’re all hard. Kenny Beats takes half of the production credits here, while Freddie, RichGains and a few more take the rest of the credits. His features are low but both parties show off. 03 Greedo delivers one of his best verses ever on “Death Row,” and singer Cassie Jo Craig steals the show on “Diamonds 2,” which also features Freddie’s young daughter.
Only about 25 minutes in total run time, this album is clearly a teaser to what’s next for Gibbs, and that might be his album Bandana. This is a good appetizer for us, we can’t wait for the full meal.
