Drake kicked off hip-hop’s recent heatwave by dropping the visual to his smash single, “In My Feelings.” For this video, Drake pays homage to the personalities that garnered him his number one hit by tapping the talents of viral sensation Shiggy, NOLA Bounce Queen, Big Freeda, LaLa Anthony, and more to encompass cameos/roles in this video.
And while his inclusion and humor are enough to continue his flawless record (making him 5-0 when it comes to Scorpion visuals), it was his support of the group that laid the foundation for “In My Feelings” that made makes the video special.
Upon hearing “In My Feelings” via Scorpion‘s unofficial, official social media listening party, fans were impressed by Drake sampling the voices of up and coming women rap group, City Girls. These Miami-based artists were making underground waves prior to the release of Scorpion, but their progression seemed to be halted when half of the duo, JT, was convicted of fraud. This led to JT turning herself into authorities less than a week after being sampled on Drake’s “In My Feelings” and is slated to be released in 2020.
Despite this, the success of the track has aided in the group’s sustainability. Also, the Toronto Tyrant has not forgotten about the City Girls. Drake has spearheaded the “#FreeJT” movement and even featured City Girl, Yung Miami, in the video wearing a custom “#FreeJT” airbrushed outfit.
